Seeing as how this subject pretty much took over The Gopher's Get To Know thread, I've decided to see if the iron is still hot (so to speak) and create an entire thread where we can discuss the various storylines, plots, characters, and/or anything else relating to the show. :)

We'll open this thread up with the following question: Of all the various storylines that took place during the show's 9 season run, which was your favorite and why?

For me, the Darlene/David love saga takes the top prize. Individually, these are 2 of my favorite characters on the show anyways, but when they are interacting with each other they really compliment each’s character and create a very relatable love story. The story of 2 slackers that know each other only because of dating siblings, who then become close friends, start dating, become lovers, break up, hate each other, re-unite, wed, and start a family.   Plus the fact that the roles are somewhat reversed since Darlene plays the dominate role whereas David plays the submissive-by-nature role only adds to the entertainment value of this pairing. And also, on a personal note, a white girl with curly black hair, a small bust, and bitchy attitude…hottest thing on the planet, imo.

I too loved the Darlene / David love saga, but I don’t know if I would say it was my favorite reoccurring storyline throughout the series.

I think that Roseanne’s problem with her father is one of the better storylines throughout the series. You get so much out of it – it gives the Roseanne character a lot of depth, and the viewers a real insight to her past. A lot of other sub-plots derive from this one too, like when Roseanne favors one child over the other, much like her father did with her and Jackie.

It also gives Bev’s character a whole new dimension, and sets up the concept that Roseanne wanted her children to have a better life than she and Dan had growing up.

Speaking of Bev…:D

I thought she had several great scenes, but my favorite scene involving her character took place after the episode where Bev hurt her back and had to stay with Rosie and Dan. She said she fell in the shower, but it turned out she was really having sex with her elderly bf (name?). Anyways, right as the episode goes off you hear the 2 talking in the back room about their love life, and then out walks Bev walks out in full a full leather suit, S&M style.

That was very hilarious… I also love the episode where David has the sex dream that everyone thinks to be about Becky #2, but ends up being about Roseanne herself. In an effort to calm her down, Dan tells Roseanne that it is natural for teenagers to dream about their girlfriend’s mothers…

Roseanne of course tells Bev about this, behind Dan’s back, giving Bev a great one-liner… “After you’re done, perhaps you and I can have some sex!” The first time I ever saw that, I laughed my ass off for so long.

What is your favorite Jackie moment?

Favorite Jackie moment? That's easy. The scene where Jackie and Fred are out on their first date. Fred asks how many men Jackie had dated, and Jackie said just a few. Then Fred mentions sleeping with guys and Jackie estimates somewhere around 60 different guys. Fred then says "wow...I don't even know 60 people" and Jackie says "Well I didn't know all of them". :snicker:

Other honorable mentions would be anytime Bev says something to Jackie and Jackie replies with "Rats!....Rats! Rats! Rats!".  Or when David moves in with Jackie after Dan kicks him out for living with Darlene.  At the end of the scene, Jackie is all dressed up pulling up her stockings. David walks in and thinks Jackie is trying to seduce him, and Jackie laughing says "David...you're just a child".

There are more, but those are the top 3 that I tend to enjoy the most.

I am shocked that you didn’t mention my favorite Jackie moment ever – remember the episode “Wait ‘til Your Father Gets Home”, which is the one where Roseanne’s dad dies, Jackie gets stuck with delivering the news to Auntie Barbra.

While on the phone with her hearing impaired aunt, Jackie has to say “Dad has passed away. Dad has died. He’s dead. Dad… he’s DEAD. DEAD. He’s fine, he sends his love! *hangs up the phone* I’m not doing that again, you can’t make me!”

That has be in stitches every time…

Yeah, that is a great Jackie moment. Another good one was when Jackie and Roseanne got into an argument because Roseanne gave Andy an oreo cookie after Jackie specifically asked her not too. Jackie's response was something similar too:

"Maybe I don't want my kid turning out the way your's did.
Smart ass high school drop out...
trailer trash...
dark clothes wearing...
boyfriends in the basement...
too soon sex doing...
four letter wording...
hoodlum Oreo eaters.
That's what you are!
the whole family!
The whole lot of you,
Oreo eaters.
And you, YOU are the Or-e-O-iest!!!"

:snicker:

Here's another topic that gets debated frequently amongst Roseanne fans: Which Becky actress did you like better? The original or her replacement?

That is a hard one, because both characters always made me mad… she was such a brat, if my child ever talked to me the way that Becky talked to Roseanne and Dan, I would pull her freaking tongue out!

The second Becky is the better looking one (Sarah Chalke), but I think she may have looked too good. Half the reason “Roseanne” always felt so realistic was because the people looked like real people… and then, the new Becky comes along looking gorgeous…

It irritates the hell out of me when they used both Beckys, you never knew which one you’d get towards the end.

Also, did you notice how abused the Becky character was after Lecy left the show? I guess that was her punishment.

I really didn't find the second Becky all that appealing visually. However, I didn't like her as an actress. She just didn't fit in with the rest of the cast. I don't know exactly how to describe it, but she was almost a bit too perky and optimistic, even when she was playing the sad or angry roles.  The first Becky (Lecy) was a bona fide brat. She played the typical the typical teenager perfectly. Although, she seemed way out of place the first time she returned.

Moving on, I'm having a brain-fart moment concerning the show. In the most recent episode I watched Roseanne was working in the beauty parlor.  Later in the show, she opens the her own Dinner. But for the life of me, I can't remember where she worked between those 2 jobs.  I know she quit working at the hair salon, and I remember her help Dan run his bike shop, but I can't remember her actual job. :-/

"Hey You"

Hey you ! out there in the cold
Getting lonely, getting old, can you feel me
Hey you ! Standing in the aisles
With itchy feet and fading smiles, can you feel me
Hey you ! don't help them to bury the light
Don't give in without a fight.
Hey you ! out there on your own
sitting naked by the phone would you touch me
Hey you ! with your ear against the wall
Waiting for someone to call out would you touch me
Hey you ! would you help me to carry the stone
Open your heart, I'm coming home
But it was only a fantasy
The wall was too high as you can see
No matter how he tried he could not break free
And the worms ate into his brain.
Hey you ! out there on the road
Always doing what you're told, can you help me
Hey you ! out there beyond the wall
Breaking bottles in the hall, can you help me
Hey you ! don't tell me there's no hope at all
Together we stand, divided we fall.

Fake boobs? She never had fake boobs... she had a breast reduction in the earlier seasons, but never fake boobs.

Anyways, moving on... today is the big day... SEASON ONE on DVD!

I am picking up my copy this evening (hopefully Wal-Mart has it in *crosses fingers*)

the WORST thing about that series was the Finale,
the most depressing crappiest SHit final episode in existance!

Dan is dead, Jackie's a lesbian, Darlene is with Mark, Becky was with David

and i dont even care what happenned to DJ

i was sorely dissapointed "the entire series was a book by roseanne" finale and rosie ends up sitting alone and miserable in her living room
it wouldn't have surprised me if it she got a gun and it fades to black, then we hear a gunshot!

i was genuinly miffed at that episode

A lot of people were either upset with the finale, or just plain confused. I liked it a lot, because with Roseanne, I had always expected the unexpected - and she didn't let me down. As I said though, some of the things that she said just wouldn't have been possible, like Darlene and Mark and Becky with David, because of their ages...

I got my DVD yesterday! Syndicated episodes though, but future seasons will be the originals... as always, Anchor Bay fucks over a great DVD series. Havent seen the bonuses yet, but I am sure the bloopers and Roseanne interview will be good.

UPDATE: The DVD has now been watched! John Goodman's interview is really short, Roseanne's is pretty interesting, and covered much more than just the first season. Other bonus features included "Wisdom from the Domestic Goddess", which is a CLIP SHOW, as well as a Seaosn One Highlight Reel. Hopefully in future DVD releases, they will spend more time on the extras!

Also, Twins, a new show starring Sarah Gilbert will be premiering into the next few weeks, which looks to be pretty dry, but we'll see how it turns out. Also, I rented Poison Ivy tonight, it stars Sarah Gilbert as well. It's an awesome movie.
