I've just watched a program in the UK called The Real World - Being Terri. It's about a young girl, who at the age of 2 years was stuck inside a burning flat, unable to get out. 3 fire engines were called out to help, however they were too late, the young girl, Terri had stopped breathing. She was taken to a burns unit to be treated, the sergens informed Terris parents that they wern't able to stabilize Terri, her parents agreed that they'd give it one more go, and then they'll let Terri rest. The final time they tried to stabilize young Terri it worked, however over 60% of her body had been patched up with artificial skin.
A few weeks after Terri was cleared to return home to her home, her mother decided she couldn't handle it, and she left Terri and her husband. She had a tremendous amount of guilt over the accident, as it was her cigarette which led to the fire in the first place. Terri's mum kept in touch with Terri for a few weeks, only by phone call, and to this day now, Terri's mother hasn't seen not only Terri, but her husband, as well as her parents - she's that overwelmed with guilt over that happened.
Terri's appearence is some what different to other childrens. What can you expect when you've had 60 - 70% of artificial skin put onto you? She goes to school, just like any other normal young child, and she has many friends and gets along with everyone. Terri has alot of help not only from her father, who is a single parent to Terri, but from experienced people who know how to deal with situations like Terri's. Terri didn't have any hair untill the doctors told her father that her natural hair will not grow back, so her father took her and bought her a wig, which now she can brush, wash, and change - just like any other young girls could.
I personally think Terri's father is a legend. How many parents could agree on bringing up a young girl, with disability that Terri has. He had to quit is job to stay home and look after Terri, as well as being there 24/7 for Terri - it can't be easy.
To this day now, Terri leads a normal life. She may look different, but she is just like any other young girl who wants to grow up and lead a normal life. However, when she gets older shes bowing to ask questions about her injuries, how? why? where? - the father will have to do his best to answer them.
Just found a site about it, as well as some pictures of Terri.
