NWA-TNA PPV
MARCH 26, 2003
LIVE FROM NASHVILLE, TENN

-Goldy Locks sang "America the Beautiful" to acoustic guitar to open the show. She's got quite a voice.

-A video montage aired of recent major angles.

-A.J. Styles barged into the SEX locker room wielding a chainsaw and blamed them for costing him a title shot last week. He said within 30 seconds (at first he mistakenly said 30 minutes and Gilbertti tried to subtly correct him) he wanted one of them in the ring. He called Glen Gilbertti a "faggot." (Mr. Religion won't swear, but he'll say that!? What a hypocrite.) Gilbertti told Sanders this was his chance to prove he belongs after losing to Hacksaw Duggan last week, so he sent him to the ring to fight in his place.

1 -- A.J. STYLES vs. MIKE SANDERS

Sanders, in one the best moves of his career, upgraded his singlet this week. Styles took a scary-looking flip bump over the top rope onto the back of his upper back and neck in the opening minute. Styles followed with a reverse DDT on the edge of the ramp. At 6:00 Sanders escaped a Styles Clash attempt. Gilbertti distracted Styles as Siaki entered the ring and held Styles. Sanders kicked toward Styles, but Styles ducked so the kick hit Siaki. Styles then cradled Sanders for a two count. Gilbertti was going to hit Styles with an object, but Styles shoved Sanders into Gilbertti, knocking him off the ring apron. Styles then rolled up Sanders for the win. After the match Gilbertti began chewing out Sanders, so Siaki had to keep them apart.

WINNER: Styles at 8:09.

STAR RATING: *1/2 -- Styles came out with good fire at the start. It settled into a passable match with a bit of a sloppy finishing sequence. Sanders just isn't anything special in the ring, although he was better than usual in this one.

-A video montage aired on the history of the Jerry Lynn-Konnan (X Division vs. luchador) feud.

2 -- KONNAN vs. JERRY LYNN

Konnan did some mic work before the match and thankfully didn't just fall back on his tired catch phrases. Konnan opened with aggressive offense including some mat work and then shoved him to the floor. His pants had fallen down past his butt at this point but found no reason to pull his pants up. Lynn reversed Konnan into the railing, but when Lynn went for a huracanrana on Konnan, Konnan caught him and powerbombed him onto the ringside mat. They went back into the ring and kept the action flowing. Lynn reversed a Konnan schoolboy attempt into a pin attempt, but then Konnan rolled him back for a two count. Nice sequence. Konnan came back at 4:30 with a rolling clothesline, but as often happens with that cumbersome move, the timing wasn't quite right so it looked a bit awkward. Lynn came back with a DDT attempt off the ropes, but Konnan blocked it. Lynn came back with a DDT for a two count. Konnan went for his finisher, but Lynn reversed it into a pin for the win. Afterward, a guy in a yellow mask jumped off the top rope onto Lynn, then ran back to the locker rooms. Konnan sat in the corner and shook his head, saying, "I don't know who that is."

WINNER: Lynn at 5:27.

STAR RATING: *3/4 -- Good five minute match.

-A sitdown interview aired with Mike Tenay and Jeff Jarrett. Tenay said that Jarrett had a charity appearance as NWA Champ that would prevent him from being on the live show. Jarrett said A.J. Styles is on the road to being great some day. Jarrett said Raven has earned a title shot, but then stumbled over saying that Raven's "best days may be behind him" because of all the abuse he took in recent weeks. Jarrett said he doesn't know where Ron Killings's head is at these days. He called D-Lo a shrewd negotiator and said he will get a title shot soon. He said Erik Watts isn't a legitimate contender to the title. He said he doesn't have time for mind games like he's playing. Regarding David Flair parading around with the fake NWA belt, Jarrett said the only person more upset than him is Dusty Rhodes. He said Dusty told him that there are only three copies of that belt that have been worn to the ring, and Dusty has one at home and Ric Flair used to until David Flair stole or borrowed it from him. When Tenay asked Jeff if he regretted making his situation with Vince Russo so personal, Jarrett took off his sunglasses and said he can't believe he even asked him that question, then stared him down. So throughout the entire interview, Jarrett managed to blow off any emotions he has toward any of his challengers, either patronizing them (Styles, Killings, D-Lo) or blowing them off (Raven, Watts), but decided to actually sell his feud with Russo. I don't understand the logic of taking that approach. Isn't the entire reason they did the angle last week with Watts and Jarrett to build up an issue where Jarrett wants to get revenge? That's gone now.

-James Mitchell announced the rules for the eight-man tag match, called a "Sadistic Madness Match." He said it was a match where the only way to win was to pin someone who was bleeding. Triple X came to the ring. Christopher Daniels told Mitchell they're game for a blood match, but said they were outnumbered. Sandman then came out to join Brian Lee and Slash. The lights then went out and a brief video graphic package aired for Saturn, and then he debuted. Saturn suplexed Triple X out of the ring.

-A pretaped segment aired of Dusty Rhodes out at his ranch talking to David Flair about "respect." He closed with some acknowledgement of his own testicles, and then smiled as if he was just really, really funny.

3 -- DAVID YOUNG (w/Athena) vs. SONNY SIAKI

Before the match Young said that Siaki disrespected a friend of his, Athena, last week. Athena came out in a neck brace because she "suffered a stinger last week." He got early offense including a flying crossbody block off the rope onto Siaki. Young went for a headscissors at ringside, but Siaki stopped him and rammed him into the ringpost. Siaki's pants began falling down during the match, revealing a black thong. Tenay said, "Anything can happen on live television." It seemed unintentional and Siaki seemed a bit embarrassed about it. Young hit a spinebuster on Siaki at 5:00. Athena got on the ring apron and slapped Siaki as Young held him. She then got in the ring and gave Siaki a low blow. Desire then attacked Athena from behind. Young pulled her off of Athena. Siaki gave Young a blow blow from behind. Sonny gave Young his Siakilypse Now finisher. Things got kinky as Siaki handcuffed Young to the middle rope. Siaki then gave Athena a Syakilypse. Referees and officials then stormed to the ring to restore order. Young was uncuffed.

WINNER: No contest at 5:40

STAR RATING: *1/2 -- It doesn't matter how talented he might be in the ring, Young doesn't have the assets necessary otherwise to be taken seriously while carrying a beer gut. He needs to drop that to have any chance at looking like anything but a jobber out of the '70s.

-Goldy interviewed Amazing Red. Well, she asked him a question, but before he could answer, Alexis Laree interrupted with a good, intense promo. When Goldy asked her what her name was, she yanked on her arm to keep her from leaving. In response, Alexis got in Goldy's face and said, "Screw you, bitch!"

-Erik Watts stood in the ring with Brian Lawler and David Flair. He addressed Jeff Jarrett. He said Jeff's interview earlier proved he is a true champ. He mocked him for his lime shirt (Jeff is the worst dresser in the history of pro wrestling, by the way) and messed up hair. He mocked him for going to a charity to wave the T&A flag rather than defend his title. He said he came to TNA, not for a title shot, but to talk. Erik complained that the title belts he's had before don't fit in his belt loops and clash with his clothes. He said his wife complains when he wears them to bed. He said he just wants to be Jeff's friend. The lights went out. When they came back on, Jarrett bashed Eri from behind with a chair. In a funny touch, on the other side of the ring, Lawler was bent over and hugging Flair's leg out of fright from being in the dark. Jarrett called Killings to come to the ring. He said he'd hand his ass to him, too. He told Gilbertti to bring his "Yankee-ass" to the ring because "this Southern boy" wants to kick your ass (that's the approach for a babyface to take when his promotion just bought TV time in New York City!) He went on to cut a promo on Raven and Styles, too. Okay, now Jarrett's interview makes some sense. He apparently was lulling his challengers into a false sense of security only to break loose on the mic later.

D-Lo then came to the ring with a mic in hand. He revealed, for some reason, that Jarrett recruits wrestlers for TNA by saying Jeff called him a few weeks ago and told him to come to please come to TNA where the playing field will be even and he can get a title shot. He said he debuted in TNA and the fans went nuts for him at first, but now he's been sidetracked by other issues. He told Jarrett not to take it personally, but the only thing he cares about is the NWA Title. Gilbertti came out with the Harris Brothers. He said Raven won the no. 1 contender's match and so SEX controls the next title shot. Gilbertti said he could get his title shot next week, but on one condition. "To ensure you have a fair fight against the Hendersonville Hillbilly, SEX is going to represent you in your corner," Gilbertti said. "And if you win the title, and believe me, you will win the title, you will take that belt and march it into the (SEX) locker room and be the next member of Sports Entertainment Extreme." D-Lo accepted the stips. Jarrett told Gilbertti that he and his buddy Vince Russo came up with a phrase, a few years ago - "Don't piss me off." He said by the end of the show, Gilbertti would find out the meaning of those words. I can't say this whole thing made any sense despite their convoluted attempt to explain it. Why does Raven earning a title shot give Gilbertti the ability to set up a title match next week not involving Raven?

4 -- DUSTY RHODES vs. DAVID FLAIR

Dusty strutted to the ring and went to work on Flair. They used a shovel and cowbell against each other, along with a few other apparatus from the ranch.

WINNER: Dusty at 2:25 after a shot to David's head with a cowbell.

STAR RATING: 1/4* -- Just a few weapon shots. Nothing much to it otherwise.

-After the match, Brian Lawler attacked Dusty and stole back the NWA Title belt that Dusty had wrestled away from Flair.

-Goldy interviewed America's Most Wanted. She asked them why they aren't in a tag match, but instead Chris Harris is listed for a singles match. She asked him what the story was, but he said there was no story, it was just him wanting to see if he still has it as a singles wrestler. When Goldy turned to ask Storm a question, Harris told her not to even look at him. He smiled and insisted there was nothing to it. Storm didn't seem thrilled, but kept his lips sealed.

5 -- AMAZING RED & ALEXIS LAREE vs. KID KASH & TRINITY

I cannot keep track of all of these one-word women's names in TNA, so it's nice that Alexis Laree was given a last name. Red and Kash wrestled a couple of minutes before the women tagged in and went at it. By 7:00 there was four-way action. Red put Kash on the mat with a powerbomb off the ropes. Trinity meanwhile put Laree down for the pin. Kash didn't seem thrilled that he didn't score the pin.

WINNERS: Kash & Trinity at 7:29.

STAR RATING: ** -- Good exchanges between Red and Kash. Overall, good intense action.

6 -- D-LO BROWN vs. CHRIS HARRIS

West pointed out that if Harris pinned D-Lo, he'd have a legitimate gripe about not getting a title shot instead of D-Lo next week. At 5:20 D-Lo threw Harris into the ref. D-Lo went for his frog splash, but Harris moved. Harris went for his top rope elbow drop, but D-Lo moved. Gilbertti then interfered, giving D-Lo the win.

WINNER: D-Lo at 6:50.

STAR RATING: **1/4 -- Solid, average match. Not bad, but not a breakout match that's going to get anyone excited about either wrestler.

-Tenay said he just received word from the back that D-Lo will indeed challenge Jarrett for the NWA Title next week. West began yelling about that match and then announced that "next week TNA will have a big announcement about NASCAR that will be next week." When will it be?

7 -- ELIX SKIPPER & CHRISTOPHER DANIELS & RON & DON HARRIS vs. BRIAN LEE & SLASH & SATURN & SANDMAN (w/James Mitchell).

Sandman drank beer on his way to the ring, and also poured beer down the throats of willing fans at ringside. Tenay pointed out that Sandman gave himself a bloody forehead even before the match started, which mean he was able to get pinned at any time. The rules stated that nobody could get pinned until they were bleeding. By 6:00 two men on each team were bleeding. This was what you'd expect - a wild brawl in the ring and around the ring. Fans chanted "Evil, Evil" to cheer on The Church. Daniels hit a nice springboard moonsault onto Slash at 8:00.At 10:30 Killings and Mabel (making his debut) entered the ring and attacked the Church members, leading to Saturn pinning Daniels.

WINNERS: The Church Team at 11:23.

STAR RATING: **1/2

After the match, SEX members ran out and set up two tables. Jarrett ran out and cleared the ring with a chair. D-Lo then ran out and got in Jarrett's face and backed him into the corner and yapped at him. D-Lo walked away. Jarrett turned him around and whacked him across the forehead with a chair
