(CNN) -- Ray Charles, the innovative singer and pianist whose combinations of blues and gospel pioneered soul music and earned him the nickname "the Genius," has died. He was 73.

Charles died at 11:35 a.m. (2:35 p.m. ET), in Beverly Hills, California, his publicist said. The cause was of complications from liver disease.

Wow. This is pretty big news, but I doubt it stands a chance against all the Reagan hoop-la.

My condolences to the Charles family. R.I.P. Ray Charles.

Ray Charles was the first person to have a #1 song on the R&B, Pop, and Country charts simultaneously. The man has been performing in front of sold out crowds and receiving standing ovations for years, and never even got to see them. The term "icon" gets thrown around way too much now-a-days, but Ray certainly was a musical icon.

BTW, wouldn't it have been more appropriate to name this title after an actual Ray Charles song? Louis Armstrong performed "wonderful world". :-/

*Edited*
Shouldn’t this be in the Entertainment folder?

Really? All this time I thought Ray Charles wrote that song. I did at least perform it didn't he?

I thought Louis Armstrong did "It's a Wonderful World".  I was confused there for a moment.

As for the entertainment folder.  Here's the wind up and the pitch!

**Throws topic to Entertainment folder.**

"Picture a weasel -- and most of us can do that, for we have met that little demon of destruction, that small atom of insensate courage, that symbol of slaughter, sleeplessness, and tireless, incredible activity -- picture that scrap of demoniac fury, multiply that mite some fifty times, and you have the likeness of a Wolverine." Louis Armstrong definitely sung that song, I know that much. Whether Ray Charles sung it as well, I have no idea. I don't know anything about Charles - I've heard the name, but that's all. I didn't even know he was blind, if indeed that's what Cybrus meant by "never even got to see them."

Yes Ray Charles was blind. As far as the topic title, you could have put up "The Thrill Is Gone" which was a Ray Charles song.

If anyone is interested in learning about Ray Charles but doesn't want to sit infront of his computer for an hour reading a biography, then click HERE. It's kind of long, but breif enough to read in 10 minutes.

Actually "The Thrill Is Gone" is a B.B. King song. I don't know what I was thinking. Sorry about that y'all
