X Factor 2011
« on: November 02, 2011, 04:58:39 PM »

Anyone from the UK watching this year? And in fact is anyone in America watching the US version? I've seen bits but I can't stand Nichol Scherzinger so it's hard to watch.

But I'm enjoying this year's UK version. It's missing SOMETHING, and it's not Simon Cowell, I think it's...talent or something. Anyway, I just read this review of it and thought it was kinda hilarious. Like Harry Hill, who seems to be ignoring X Factor this year.

http://www.sabotagetimes.com/tv-film/x-factor-2011-week-11-chills-thrills-and-body-paint/

If there's already a thread for this year's X Factor that I've forgotten then just merge this, I'm about to leave and wanted to post this link before I forgot.

  • I prefer The Guardian's live blog - much along the same lines, but zippier.

And you're definitely right about the dip in talent this year. The only acts I'm interested in seeing are Johnny and Kitty, more for the spectacle than anything else although they do have decent voices. But the writing was on the wall when Amelia Lily got dropped on the first live show. She had popstar written all over her, yet they'd rather push Frankie to the moon (I'd sooner launch him into the sun).

Gary Barlow had done well for himself, coming across as an excellent replacement for Simon Cowell with his honesty and straight shooting, but his credibility takes a massive hit every time he's seen to be backing Frankie. I think it must be a guilt thing, trying to right the wrongs of his past with Robbie or something. Or else he's just following the script like the rest of them.

And I'm starting to dislike Tulisa almost as much as I hated Cheryl. Not quite there yet though - it takes time to develop that level of disdain.

Good show last night, especially Marcus, as usual. I'm really behind Marcus to win now, he's easily my favourite, and it's not like so far he hasn't deserved it. The only one to come close to him is Misha, who would be another worthy winner if it wasn't for her attitude.

Johnny was shit, until he started singing You Spin Me Right Round, he can actually sing in a relatively deep/normal voice too, and not just like a chipmunk. One of my early favourites was Craig but since his 'make over' he looks like a bell-end. And last week's performance was horrible, but it was one of my favourite songs so it was expected I wouldn't like it, but this week's too was just...annoying. I don't know why, I just wanted him to stop.

Kitty still can't sing, she can shout loudly. I hate the tone of her voice. She doesn't put on very exciting performances either. Marcus puts on a much better show with a sense of effortlessness that she can't pull off.

I really like the judging panel - I don't know if I buy the tabloids saying they're arguing to be controversial and get ratings, I think they're just picking up on things they might have politely let go in real life. I think there's a difference. It's not forced, just allowed to come out.

Oh yeah, I don't really know how Little Mix have made it so far. I mean I'm happy for them, since no one expected them to last past the second week. But it just seems like any girl band on X Factor can't sing together. They try and 'harmonise' and it just sounds like they're all singing normally which makes it sound screechy and annoying. Like they could all just be in a 6th form common room singing along to the radio, not in a talent show.

There's a rumour that the judges will have to switch which acts they mentor that's going to be announced tonight, which I don't buy for a second. It wouldn't make any sense, and I think the right judges are mentoring the right acts at this point. Like can you imagine Louis mentoring the boys? I dread to think what he'd do with Marcus. He said himself on Xtra Factor that he would never have thought to give Marcus that song last night.

  • Marcus was excellent last night, probably head and shoulders above any performance in the competition this year. Which isn't saying much, but still, it was great.

I agreed with Gary about Johnny's performance. It was alright for what it was, and maybe couldn't have been avoided with this week's theme, but it was a step backwards at a time when he really needed to build on last week's momentum and solidify himself as a serious contender. Now he's got to almost start from scratch if he survives the double elimination.

It was fun to see Louis actually voice the opinion of the public for a change (about Frankie), even if he did get shouted down for it by the other judges and react in his usual childish way in response - literally fingers in ears, "I don't care what you think!" Considering how basic the lyrics to that chorus are, I don't know how Frankie still managed to fluff the chorus, but that's just the kind of useless twat he is.

Tonight I'd like to see Frankie and Janet go, but I know full well it won't happen.

  • They'd be my two picks too. I marked out when Louis said what everyone was thinking to Frankie. "You'll never be a rockstar and the only thing big about you is your hair." It just about sums up everything to hate about Frankie.

I don't remember him messing his lines up, just Janet. Who has become incredibly (more) annoying since she got this attitude. I guess the signs were there when she repeatedly badmouthed where she came from as though she was so much better than anyone else that lives there and worthy of so much more. Was satisfying to see them hype up how "this is all down to her, from her hair to the song choice, all on her, nothing to do with Kelly, definitely all hers, entirely" and for the judges to roundly tell her how shit it was.

There's three slots that Frankie can be in tonight out of 9 for him to leave. If he's bottom he's straight out, and if he's in the sing off then the judges will get rid of him surely. I think even Gary Barlow would vote against him in the interest of 'honesty'.

I don't remember him messing his lines up, just Janet.

It's supposed to go: "I got a feeling / That tonight's gonna be a good night / That tonight's gonna be a good night / That tonight's gonna be a good, good night."

He got complacent and forgot to repeat "good" in the last line. You could see that he realized what he'd done as it threw him for a moment and for a split-second he seemed to contemplate giving up on the rest. Unfortunately he carried on.

I think even Gary Barlow would vote against him in the interest of 'honesty'.

Nah, not anymore. He's tied his flag to the mast and I think he'd sooner aim for "loyalty to his acts" than back down now. There were signs a few weeks ago that he might wash his hands of the little git for the sake of his own credibility, but then he went right back to the false praise the following week.

It kind of annoys me that Cocozza has gone in this way rather than just being voted out mid-way through the live shows, because in his warped little (actually pretty big) head, this is another 'rockstar' thing to happen. And he'll probably get more press and coverage because of it.

There's rumours, don't know where they came from, that The Risk will return in his place. I think that's complete bullshit, as in, made up out of someone's ass. No way would they bring back The Risk since they came bottom in last week's public vote. If anyone, they'll unfortunately bring back Johnny because he was voted out by the judges, and they'll do it just for a moment where he can camply announce "I'm baaaaaaaaack!" or worse, "heeeeeeeere's Johnny!"

    Ugh.

  • They might do a Big Brother-style "vote for who you want to return" thing. Then Amelia comes back and wins the competition at Frankie's expense...

I agree with you though, this will sadly only add to his 'rebel' image, as it can easily be spun to idiots that "he was too much of a bad boy for Simon Cowell's machine!!!"

Edit: They are indeed going the "vote someone back in" route:

The four X Factor contestants who have never faced the public vote after being eliminated by the Judges in the first Live Show have been given the chance to return to the competition this Saturday (12 November). With a place in the show up for grabs following Frankie Cocozza’s departure, the public will be able to decide via a phone vote which one will re-join the competition.

The four contestants, one from each category: James Michael (Boys); Amelia Lily (Girls); 2 Shoes (Groups); and Jonjo Kerr (Over 25s) went out of the competition when the Judges decided their other three acts should stay.

The act with the most votes will re-enter The X Factor and perform live on Saturday night’s show alongside the six remaining acts left in the competition.

An X Factor spokesperson says: “The four acts have never been in a public vote so, with Frankie leaving the competition, this is an opportunity for the public to decide who comes back to the show.”

To find out who will be returning, tune in at 8.15pm on Saturday night on ITV1 as one of them performs either a Queen classic or Lady Gaga hit on the famous X Factor stage. Only one will get a second chance.

Amelia was back with a vengeance last night and pretty much has the competition in the bag, unless she really screws up between now and Christmas. It's almost too smooth, too fairytale, and bigger cynics than I are already saying it must have been planned this way from the start. I don't think that it was, but I can definitely understand why they feel that way.

Apart from her, the best delivery of the night was Kitty's. The only thing that detracts slightly from her singing is a slight speech impediment that seems to come through at times, but she's a born performer who's right at home on the stage.

ITV's handling of the technical problems at the start of the show was horribly amateur. I tuned in 30 seconds late and had no idea why they were playing endless clips of the auditions. The channel could easily have run a ticker along the bottom of the screen saying "We apologise for the delay to tonight's live broadcast, we hope to air live from the X Factor studio shortly." In trying to find out what the heck was going on, I logged onto ITV's official listings page and clicked the link for the X Factor mini-site, and it took me to last year's version. Like I said, amateur.

I tuned in a few seconds late too and had to go to Twitter to see what people were tweeting had happened.

And ok, no. NO. NO NO NO. Kitty, can not, sing. CANNOT SING. She shouts into a microphone with an annoying throaty yelling kind of scream. She has never had a good performance from where I'm sitting. The staging is forced and lame, her voice is shouty, and her personality is horrible. My mum said this morning that she liked it too. So did the Guardian review guy. You're all deaf and blind. She's horrible. I can't stand listening to her. Horrible. So so bad. Horribly bad. Ok? Good.

I mean if you need a comparrison, look at Kitty singing Who Wants To Live Forever by Queen in Week One and then Amelia Lilly singing The Show Must Go On by Queen this week. It's the difference between someone shouting loudly and someone singing passionately.

I thought the criticisms of Marcus were unfair too. His performance was similar to last week, but only in it's style and attitude. There are a lot more people in the X Factor that do the same thing every week without question, so if Marcus has one week where he does something vaguely similar to another week then it's ok to me. I mean look at Janet every week, Little Mix every week, Craig, Johnny, Frankie, Kitty etc. All of them do the same style every week. The only consolation is that they seemed to be thinking everybody (but their own acts) was a little 'samey' this week, Tulisa looked like she'd rather be anywhere else during most of the songs. So maybe they're just bored of the contestants, like most of us, rather than picking on Marcus in particular.

Misha B was disappointing to me too, I just didnt like the song arrangement. I usually like that song, but it sounded strange and like it didn't build anywhere. It was just droney and monotonous. I want her to rap again too, they're obviously playing it safe since she went into the bottom two.

Oh, and Little Mix did the acepella stuff Kelly has been going on about for the last couple of weeks on the Xtra Factor...and it was actually really good. The phat one beat boxed and everything. They teased they'd do that next week but I bet they don't. The bastards.

Then try sitting in front of the TV instead of Eoghan Quigg's YouTube channel. :p

Well that was a bit of unexpected drama... No way did Amelia deserve to be in the bottom two, and I think I'd have incited the biggest riot this country's seen in weeks if she'd been sent home. Glad to be rid of boring old Craig though.

Amelia's ready to be a pop star right out of the blocks. She's not one of those acts who'll need to be hidden away for a year while they fine tune their talent, craft their image and figure out how the hell to launch a sustainable career. She could release a pop album tomorrow and it would be as good as anything out there, vocally and performance-wise. She could bring back exactly the kind of prestige and visibility that the winner's spot needs right now.
