Blockbuster is in bankruptcy protection.  Which means that a receiver runs the company and it is protected from going into bankruptcy, for now.

Basically, someone is trying to make them more financially viable.  So most of its stores are being closed down.

Yeah, most of the Blockbuster stores in my area are gone now, with like one that still operates. I worked for Movie Gallery from 2006-2008, which at the time was the second largest video rental store, and they filed bankruptcy and as of last year or so have all but disappeared.  :-/
