We started our own business
« on: August 13, 2011, 08:28:22 AM »

  • We opened a jewellery stall selling cheap crap and officially started it today.  We were there from 9 til 2 and only made £5...From my sister's friend who took pity on us...

I hate real life.  Is it too late to go do the 3rd year of Uni? :(

We painted it all and I designed the basic layout, although the colours aren't exactly what I wanted but it's what Illy's mum gave me.

I did the thing on the wall:

So this friend of Illy's sister, did she ask you for a pearl necklace?

    That joke is getting old.

After me, Illy, his sister and some little random helper girl that came along for some reason left, Illy's mum made almost £50. So that's not too bad, for the first day. We were expecting Saturday to be the busiest day, and maybe it will be when it's a nice sunny day. Today was grey and raining on and off so not ideal shopping conditions. But other market people there were saying "my busiest days are usually Monday and Wednesday" or something, so maybe Saturday won't be as busy as we were originally thinking, which is fine.

Because it's split between four people, we need to collectively make £70 a day (on average over the 6 working days) for me and Illy to afford rent. Who knows if we'll be able to do it. Illy's mum got us dreaming by suggesting we could easily get £150 a day, and if we did me and Illy would be able to live in luxury pretty much, so for the last week I've been like looking up more expensive houses to rent and seeing how much swimming pools cost to run etc. So maybe its good that we've struggled a bit so we know it's not gunna be smooth running and we need to put some effort into it. I dunno. Maybe we'll make £300 on Monday. :D

No, it's just something to do for money for now.  We hoped we'd be able to get our own flat and have minimal hours to continue doing film stuff in our own time.  We figured places like supermarkets work you like horses and for not that much money so we'd rather try work for ourselves.  In the end we had just under £50 which means it could still be possible.

My Mum has wanted to do something like this for years now but with wallpaper, for some reason she reckoned she could make tons from it.  She's soon realising there's a difference between selling to her friends and strangers though.

  • It is a pretty bold step, but I admire that you guys are willing to put yourselves out there and take the chance. My roommates and I are saving money so we can start a video business, filming weddings and stuff since my roommate's quite the amazing editor.

Women are probably better at selling this type of jewelry to people. Customers perception of two dudes selling it is clearly throwing off the sales.
