SmackDown - August 27th 2010

Darkness Descends
The Undertaker returns to SmackDown, while his treacherous brother, World Heavyweight Champion Kane faces Rey Mysterio in a No Disqualification Match. Plus, Intercontinental Champion Dolph Ziggler battles Kofi Kingston.

The Taker/Kane stuff has been great so I hope they keep the standard up. And surely we haven't seen the last of Alberto vs Rey, so all sorts of things could happen in this No DQ match.

:ohdear:

While I agree with WWE that having Taker be the one to permanently unmask Kane would have been a better story than Triple H doing it, trying to pretend that's how it happened now is locking the stable door after the horse has already bolted. It's unnecessary to lie about their past in what has otherwise been a terrific angle, and that glaring inconsistency saps the immersion right out of it because it reminds you that this is not the epic saga that Kane recalls on the mic, but instead a retconning of a directionless gimmick by writers who plan from one PPV to the next and expect their audience to have a memory even shorter.

Take out that fly in the ointment and I'm still loving this feud, but it's so irritating that they felt the need to patronize the fans and undermine the whole angle with this pointless "historical photoshopping" of one of the defining moments in the Big Red Machine's career. What are we going to have next? Brother Love returning to help his son Kane? Clips of Kane winning his first WWE Title in a TLC match? As long as it "enhances" the current storyline it's all fair game, right? Just pretend you don't remember.

  • This has me curious now. I want to see that ret-conning job.

Did they try to use footage from Kane vs Undertaker at SummerSlam 2000? Undertaker did unmask Kane that night, but Kane ran to the back covering his face. I remember me and my friend going frame-by-frame to see if we could see Kane's face.

  • Yep, they used that footage on the previous show, and implied it was the unmasking of Kane that caused him to now be wrestling without a mask. Matt Striker then reinforced it on this show's commentary.

That is the weirdest and most ridiculous thing...

But I definitely would never put something like that past WWE. Especially when it comes to Kane.

I'm just surprised Undertaker hasn't been revealed as his father and one day a girl shows up wearing red and we're told she has always been Kane and we never see Glenn Jacobs again.
