As I learned with Chris Benoit, what a person does outside their profession should not tarnish the impact said person had on their craft. While it is indeed true that Michael Jackson, during the later years of his existence, turned his life into a walking, talking circus sideshow, I would argue that he didn't 'go from' being a music icon. Despite his life choices, unproven allegations, baby dangling etc. the man is still very much a legend in the music industry and that title came first and foremost with many people (not just his fans).
What I am finding especially intriguing is the apparent 'fandom' this man still had. I, of course, knew that Michael still had many fans, what I didn't know was how passionate they still were (are). My mother came home from work yesterday and said that co-workers and patients at the hospital were bawling their eyes out. I had friends on Facebook and instant messenger who admitted to crying upon hearing the news. Then, which I find to be rather sickening, I come onto certain forums and people are literally praising 'God' that this 'sick pedophile' had been 'sent to hell' at long last. Of course, there is also those who were rather indifferent about the whole situation.
Like I said earlier in the thread, I don't know what Michael Jackson was capable of outside of his music career, and I don't think anybody will ever know for certain (the accusers and Michael notwithstanding). What I do know, is what this phenomenal talent was capable of on the screen and on the mic, and that was magic plain and simple.
