Midway on their way out?
« on: March 03, 2009, 08:51:38 AM »

Two weeks ago, Midway Games filed for bankruptcy, trying to stay afloat after many recent struggles.

Finish them!

The writing really does seem to be on the wall for Midway, with the revelation that the company is trying to offload the Mortal Kombat franchise.

Undoubtedly the company's most important asset, it's sure to find a buyer if the price is right.

If they close the Mortal Kombat deal Midway execs are up for their share of a $4 million bonus package – while other employees are going unpaid.

I can't see them being interested, as it would stretch their specialized resources to handle yet another beat-em-up franchise, but imagine if Capcom bought Mortal Kombat. We might finally see a cross-over game with the Street Fighter series. The only question is whether they'd treat their new acquisition with care and respect, or if the deal would go the way of the WCW Invasion...

Some of the modern games under the Midway banner are listed here. I also remember them being associated with some of the old 16-bit WWF games.

Given the "success" of the first one, I think that was in doubt whether Midway went bust or not.

It looks like impoverished publisher Midway has found a buyer at last, with Warner Bros Interactive snapping it up for a bargain basement US$33m.

If it goes through, the deal will give Warner, which owns DC Comics, control over Mortal Kombat and Wheelman.

However, it's not buying Midway's Newcastle and San Diego studios or the TNA Impact wrestling license. Midway will try to sell them to someone else.

Impact 2 being made by someone else can't be a bad thing.

I like the way Impact played as far as speed is concerned, but I agree with Heady. Someone else making it isn't a bad idea.

Even though original publisher Midway is now bankrupt, the Mortal Kombat team and licence were quickly snapped up by Warner Bros.

News of its first game under new management suggests that it will be a return to the mature-rated violence of the earlier games and will not be another crossover with the DC Universe.

Creator Ed Boon described the new fatalities as "kind of sick".

I'll wait until we see more details before I get excited, but at least they're working on it.

Some of their console games are listed here (scroll up for arcade games).
