Last night I saw The Invention of Lying, after being sold on the above poster. There are definitely some funny parts, but more so in the first half of the film. There's a theme that's introduced very well at the mid-way point, but then becomes the central focus to the detriment of more varied humor.

The 12A certificate makes itself known in places, but is surprisingly undermined in several others, from the explicit dialog of the first scene, to the controversial lie that dominates the second half of the movie. I don't know what certificate it has in the US, but a lot of American parents in particular wouldn't want their kids seeing this.

It's a fun concept though, which is explored well in the first half with some genuinely funny moments and fearless satire. Worth checking out, just don't expect a smooth masterpiece.

Paranormal Activity.

Great film. Scared me. If you want a film to creep you out but don't want the same old gore then this is the film for you.

5/5

Last night I rewatched Legends of the Fall for the first time in years. Well, just the last hour of it, but I remembered enough about the rest. Great film.

The story takes place over a decade or so, beginning at the time of the First World War, and concerns three brothers from an American ranch who fall in love with the same woman. The most significant is played by Brad Pitt, and their father is Anthony Hopkins - a partnership that would later be renewed in Meet Joe Black, but they are very different here.

With just a handful of violent scenes it's not action heavy at all, as most of the drama comes from the difficult relationships evolving from the brothers' shared interest, and the decisions they have to make as circumstances change. The traditional theme of heroes and villains does emerge towards the end, driving the plot towards its conclusion, but is not central to the tale in its basic form.

And that's enough of me trying to sound all literary. Just watch the film if you get the chance and aren't just keen on action or comedy. That said, the singing/wailing of the family's Native American friend can be inadvertantly quite mirthsome at the least appropriate times...

I saw Avatar last night.

Epic movie, one of the best I've seen in a long while.  :D

Are you a big Sci-Fi nerd? I thought it was okay, but nothing worth a fraction of the hype or budget it got.

I've just finished watching Changeling. Rated an 8.0 by IMDB and pretty much worth it I thought. It's not like a film i've seen before and it kept me interested throughout which I didn't think it would since it was set in the 1920's! Angelina Jolie does good in it, definitely recommend watching it.

Watched a really odd film today called When the Wind Blows. It's a late 1980s animated tale scripted by Raymond Briggs (who wrote The Snowman) about an old English couple who lived through World War II, now presented with government guidance on how to survive a nuclear bomb.

While there's humor throughout, by the end it's more moving than comedic. The animation is fascinating though, with a simultaneous blend of hand drawn 2D artwork and real stopframe 3D that works really well considering its age.

A good listener tries to understand what the other person is saying. In the end he may disagree sharply, but because he disagrees, he wants to know exactly what it is he is disagreeing with.

I don't get what all the fuss is about when it comes to Hurt Locker. It was OK, but not something I'd pay to see. Glad I watched it with a group of friends at home, and not in a theater.

The last movie I saw in theaters was The Lovely Bones. A far cry from the book, but it was  a decent 'date movie' that I enjoyed more than expected.

Full Metal Jacket, great movie.  I watched 2001 before this and was bored as shit but this one made up for it.

Kubrick marathons are great stuff. 2001. Clockwork. FMJ. Better finish that shit off with Dr. Strangelove and The Shining.  :)

Already seen both of those.  There's Eyes Wide Shut that I have as well but sounds gay so will probably take me forever to watch it, if I get around to it at all.
