Last night I rewatched
Legends of the Fall for the first time in years. Well, just the last hour of it, but I remembered enough about the rest. Great film.
The story takes place over a decade or so, beginning at the time of the First World War, and concerns three brothers from an American ranch who fall in love with the same woman. The most significant is played by Brad Pitt, and their father is Anthony Hopkins - a partnership that would later be renewed in Meet Joe Black, but they are very different here.
With just a handful of violent scenes it's not action heavy at all, as most of the drama comes from the difficult relationships evolving from the brothers' shared interest, and the decisions they have to make as circumstances change. The traditional theme of heroes and villains does emerge towards the end, driving the plot towards its conclusion, but is not central to the tale in its basic form.
And that's enough of me trying to sound all literary. Just watch the film if you get the chance and aren't just keen on action or comedy. That said, the singing/wailing of the family's Native American friend can be inadvertantly quite mirthsome at the least appropriate times...
