Last Movie You've Seen
« on: June 06, 2009, 12:10:18 PM »

This is a thread I've always enjoyed at other forums. Whenever you see a movie (at the cinema, via dvd, on the television, etc.) and want to voice a few small little opinions that don't really merit a thread of their own just throw them in here. I'll use it quite a bit. Please, no spoilers.

This is my grading scale (for reference or use):
10 - Classic
9 - Near Perfect
8 - Great
7 - Really Good
6 - Good
5 - Mediocre
4 - Bad
3 - Really Bad
2 - Horrible
1 - Unwatchable

I'll get us started:

Drag Me To Hell: I think that even though Drag Me To Hell implemented a few of the techniques currently plaguing the horror genre, it is definitely the best horror film of the past few years. Sam Raimi returns to form, though it's not quite as scary as his last outing. Spider-Man 3 still gives me nightmares! 6/10

Up: I wonder how a studio that has been producing films one after another for so many years can still have audiences shuffling their list of favorites. Pixar does it again; Up is an inspiring and heartfelt feature with enough charisma and energy to lift even the most lifeless body right up out of their seat. Another home run. And a certain Toy teaser-trailer just happens to be the proverbial icing on this cake. 9/10

Paul Blart:  Mall Cop

I thought it was pretty funny.  Nothing special but a decent movie to watch if you're bored.  I went in expecting it to be pretty crappy for some reason much like with Hitch and Chuck & Larry but I ended up enjoying it like I did those.

I also love King of Queens so...

Night At The Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

This movie was alright at best. I'm not really a big fan of Ben Stiller, so the movie was kinda unenjoyable due to his humor or lack thereof.  This movie seemed like i was watching a boring re-run. The idea seems dry after seeing the first one...5/10

Jumper: I watched this on HBO or starz yesterday. I have to say it was cliche. The only slightly interesting thing about this movies was the fact that it played on a group of people (Jumpers) being killed by Templers. Which again is cliche as all get out. Still I like the idea of a secret society of religious fanatics. Anyway I'll put this at 4/10

The Hangover 10/10

I just saw this and it is the funniest movie of the decade byfar it is so clever has just the right amount of crude humor mixed with clever jokes that you have to think twice about.  Every single actor stands out and should be praised for their efforts. Just the shenanigans they get into are hilarious, but the explanation of how it happens is even funnier. So get a couple of your friends together and see this movie immediately.

The Hangover: The Hangover is definitely the best outrageous teen comedy film so far this year, but when your competition includes the likes of Observe & Report, and I Love You Man being the best doesn't seem like much of a feat. This is a film that tip toes on the line of too crude, and leaps over the one of reality. Leave your thinking cap at the door, because you won't be needing it. While a good film, I certainly hope Hangover is not the best laugh-out-loud comedy 2009 has to offer us. 6/10

Slumdog Millionaire

It was pretty good.  I thought first half was kind of boring because I didn't care about the kid but it was entertaining enough and picked up in 2nd half.  I cared enough by the end to think it was nice.  Plus the chick got hot.

GOT hot?

Slumdog Millionaire also happens to be the last movie I saw, weirdly. I thought it was way over hyped, and no way deserving of all the awards it got. The main character was annoying when he grew up and his accent/acting were bad in places (the kid versions were all great though). It wasn't a bad film, but I won't watch it again.

Bring it, MinimumMitch.  :table:

The Visitor: Inspiring and unquestionably captivating in its sensitive landscape, The Visitor is no foreigner to gripping filmmaking ingrained in kindness and inspirational strength. It is precisely the kind of motion picture the Republicans would rather Americans not see, as it individualizes its foreign characters and provides them with a communal voice that demands to be heard. 8/10

Terminator Salvation
Judging by the thread, I was the only one interested in seeing this, but that hasn't stopped the outpouring of hate from people who bought their ticket anyway and didn't like what they saw. I think the negative overreactions are largely unfounded. While there are some easily identifiable flaws, I enjoyed the film. It's not a classic but I'm satisfied with this start to the new trilogy. Virtual Arnie looks tremendous and there are several good references that keep it faithful to the series. I was especially pleased to see that despite the power of CGI, the robots still moved like robots, in the somewhat stilted fashion of T1, instead of the overly fluid motion seen in Transformers. Overall, people expecting something revolutionary will be disappointed, but if you go in with an open mind then I'd recommend it.

Not the last movie that I saw, but I figured I would post it because Headliner reviewed it.

Terminator: Salvation is a disastrously awful movie whose belligerent lifelessness and foolishness can best be replicated by picking up a rock and smashing it against one’s temple repeatedly. Director McG jumped over a significant amount of time in the Terminator universe and left us in a destructive world full of mayhem and anarchy, but little-to-no story. The only saving grace in this film is the phenomenal performances by Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, and Anton Yelchin. 4/10

And before anybody jumps on me for 'hating' on summer blockbusters just because they're so mainstream, here's my Star Trek review from a few weeks ago:

Star Trek is a franchise often met with a certain stigma that would leave audience members feeling either alienated or accepted, but that is not a problem with this film. Star Trek is a breath of fresh air for this series and sets a new standard for summer hits, a standard that few can be compared to. The writing, directing, editing, effects, and acting are all top-notch. Mediocre, big-budget film makers such as McG and Michael Bay need to take notice – this is how summer blockbuster is done. 8/10

As much as you bash the film, you're the first person I've seen to have a good word to say about Christian Bale's performance. I wouldn't knock it like many have, but I don't actually see what was "phenomenal" about his acting. He was pretty much the same gruff, frowny shouter from start to finish, which isn't necessarily his fault if the script called for it, but there was nothing standout about his performance. Anton Yelchin was good though. And on a side note, it was a pleasant surprise to see Moon Bloodgood's name in the opening credits - I remembered her from Day Break, but didn't know she was in this until that moment.

I went to see this on your and fans review. I found it funny as hell. I laughed from beginning to end, and while I typically don't partake or enjoy Stupid comedy. I loved it, I could indentify with it. I think most of us have friends like that or identify with something of that nature. We've all had drunken mistakes. It was great.
