Avengers Movie

Here's a bit of 'Avengers' casting buzz that's sure get fans talking. Eva Longoria as Janet Van Dyne, aka The Wasp.

Oh No They Didn't celebrity gossip and paparazzi blog snapped some incriminating photos of the 'Desperate Housewives' star that suggest she may be taking on the part.

In the photos, Longoria is seen in the parking garage of the building where Marvel Entertainment keeps their Hollywood offices. Presumably, Longoria has just met with the filmmakers. Clearly visibile in her hands a stack of Avengers comics.

Now we know the 'Avengers' movie is supposed to include Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor and Ant Man, each of which character is or will be top-lining its own movie before 'Avengers' comes out. But the above roster makes for kind of a sausage party and Ant Man's sugar mama The Wasp has been part of the roll call since issue #1.

So, if Eva was meeting with Marvel and the meeting was about 'The Avengers' then it's pretty easy to imagine Longoria wearing the wings of the winsome Wasp. Her tough-but-pampered 'Housewives' character Gabby isn't too far removed from the long-suffering Wasp after all.

Does this mean she'll be appearing in Edgar Wright's 'Ant-Man' movie as well?

Let the speculation begin!

Source: MTV Splash Page

Marvel fans, be they old school or contemporary, know some version of the formation of 'The Avengers' and, invariably, those heroes have to band together to stop a rampage by the Incredible Hulk. So this battle will appear in the movie version of Marvel's flagship super team, right?

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige recently declined to confirm this potential storyline for MTV Splash page, but strongly hinted that it was possible.

"Here's the thing — it is all in the planning stages, but certainly if you look back to any number of ‘Hulk' comics, or 'Avengers' comics, or 'The Ultimates' comics or the 'Ultimate Avengers' DVD that we released, it certainly makes a hell of a sequence," Feige said of the anticipated battle.

"To have all of the Avengers going up against a green goliath?" he teased. "I think that would be very cool to see that on the screen."

In the same conversation, Feige also said there are no immediate plans to do another 'Hulk' movie.

Please, please, please...

Yeah, I saw a different report about that. They say you have to go frame by frame to actually see it, but you can see his shield in the ice best.

The director said it was a hidden appearance in the film he had to cut so...

It's official!

Marvel has announced that Robert Downey Jr. will fulfill his four picture deal with Marvel Studios by appearing as Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, in both 'Iron Man 2' and 'The Avengers'.

Jon Favreau is also locked to return to the directors chair for 'Iron Man 2' and will serve as an executive producer the Marvel super-team film.

The studio has also made official the casting of Don Cheadle as Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes in 'Iron Man 2'. The actor is also on board for 'The Avengers' and will play the character in any Iron movies beyond part 2. As readers know well, Cheadle replaces Terrence Howard in the role.

"We are very excited about working with the extraordinarily talented Don Cheadle as we expand the role of Rhodey in Iron Man 2. It has already become apparent as we prep the movie for production, that the dynamic between Robert and Don will take Iron Man 2 to new heights," said Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios.

Here's the official log line for 'The Avengers':

In a movie event, THE AVENGERS will bring together the super hero team of Marvel Comics characters for the first time ever, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk and more, as they are forced to band together to battle the biggest foe they've ever faced.

It's interesting to note that Marvel specifically calls out the Hulk, but is not yet ready to announce Edward Norton as part of the package.

And, conspicuously absent from the above are Ant Man and the Wasp, both of whom have been speculated as being part of the line up. Those characters could certainly be part of the "and more" though.

'Iron Man 2' is due in theaters May 7, 2010.  'The Avengers' is slated for July 15, 2011.

Cheadle is represented by UTA. Downey and Favreau are represented by CAA.

It's probably Iron-Man 3 or Avenger 2.

IESB.net broke the news at the top of the month that Joss Whedon was a contender to direct Marvel's mega-movie 'The Avengers'. Although the story ran amid a flurry of bogus April Fools postings, IESB assured it's readers that the story was not a hoax.

Yesterday confirmation of the news came from multiple sources, first and foremost the typically reliable Deadline.com. That site reports that Marvel Studios are in final negotiations with Whedon to direct the movie.

Deadline lists Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Samuel L. Jackson among the actors starring in the movie, playing Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and Nick Fury respectively. We also understand that Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hiddleston and Clark Gregg will be on hand as War Machine, Black Widow, Loki and SHIELD Agent Coulson. Nobody is saying for sure if Edward Norton will come into the fold as Bruce Banner or if his CG counterpart the Hulk will appear as previously expected.

Variety also confirms the news and also adds info that Whedon is now doing his director's polish on Zak Penn's script for the film.

'The Avengers' will assemble on the big screen on May 4, 2012 with Paramount pictures distributing. Whedon will likely start rolling cameras on the film early next year.

    Good news...

Chatting with MovieWeb.com, Marvel Studios Pres Kevin Feige addressed the question of whether or not Hulk will be in 'The Avengers'  movie.

"We certainly plan on it. He was there in The Avengers #1 and in The Ultimates #1 so certainly the Hulk is a key part of these films leading up to 'The Avengers'. 'Iron Man 2' has some clues to where these timelines take place as they relate to each other. So I certainly think Hulk will be a player on that team."

But what about Ed Norton as Bruce Banner? Feige said that's a function of story demands and also the actor's schedule.

"So we reserve the right to say Hulk will be in it for sure, we'll see about Banner."

The Avengers is still a long way off, but it’s never too early to start laying some ground rules. As with any superhero movie, we’re filled with a mixture of excitement and fear. After all, this isn’t a Ghost Rider or Blade movie; these are Earth’s Mightiest Heroes we’re talking about. If you’re gonna do it, you gotta do it right. With that in mind, we respectfully submit our rules for an Avengers movie.

    5. Include the Hulk
We loved The Incredible Hulk, but it underperformed at the box office and ol’ Jade Jaws’ inclusion in the big team-up movie has been in question ever since. But if you’re talking about earth’s mightiest, there are none mightier than the Hulk and if you’re talking about an Avengers movie, you have to use him. First and foremost, he’s a founding member and secondly, he’s one of Marvel’s most recognizable characters.

Whether its continuity or toy sales that motivate the Hulk being in the movie, it’s hard to argue with putting Hulk in the movie, either on the team or against it.

    4. A Titanic Tone
Getting the tone right doesn’t just mean making sure it’s an action-packed epic. We want to see characters that are true to the way they’re portrayed in their own films as well as the way they’re portrayed in the comics. Internal conflict has been present in the series since day one, with the Hulk quitting the team by the end of the second issue and Hawkeye squabbling with Cap from the moment he joined the team. Anything different just wouldn’t be the Avengers.

Speaking of Hawkeye, make sure you keep up with the Easter eggs! Both Iron Man and Hulk (as well as the X-Men films) were noted for their references to the larger Marvel Universe. We’d like to see that continued with the inclusion of secondary characters. Even if it’s a simple cameo by S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Clay Quartermain or a scene with Bruce Banner on Dr. Leonard Samson’s couch, these little moments serve to create a greater continuity and enhance the overall film.

But we also need to see a film that feels huge and important. Think Avatar, 300 or Lord of the Rings – an epic adventure where the fate of the world is at stake and every man, woman and child in the theater is on the edge of their seat, gripping the armrests the entire length of the film.

    3. Masters of Evil
“And there came a day unlike any other, when Earth’s mightiest heroes found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, the Avengers were born–to fight the foes no single hero could withstand!”

In other words, this isn’t the type of film where a bald scientist makes a land grab. There’s got to be a reason why these heroes would join together, a threat so big that it takes Marvel’s biggest guns to combat it. A super-villain team up! Using villains introduced in the heroes’ own films, such as Whiplash, the Leader, Loki and Baron Zemo (or the Red Skull, if Zemo doesn’t make it into the Cap film), a group of the vilest villains should be assembled to really give the good guys a run for their money and ensure that it isn’t a one-sided fight.

    2. It’s the Story, Stupid
Yes, we want big action. We want IMAX-sized excitement and threats worthy of the combined efforts of Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and the Hulk. We want three different Iron Man armors and Hulk smashing through reinforced steel as though it were tissue paper. We demand to see Cap slingin’ that shield and bouncing it off of bad guys heads while Thor calls down the thunder and if all goes well, we’d love to see Ant Man and Wasp flyin’ around, bein’ all tiny and stuff. But by no means do we want any of this to come at the expense of a solid script.

If it’s nothing more than a slugfest, then you’ve just wasted a whole lot of money hiring talented actors like Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle. Look, these are superhero movies–they don’t have to be Glengarry Glen Ross. But escapism doesn’t have to be mindless either.

    1. Know Your Role
Sam Jackson’s cameo as Nick Fury at the end of Iron Man was a special treat and when we heard he’d signed on to continue the role in a billion more movies, we were ecstatic. But as much as we love the idea of the former leader of the Howling Commandos assembling the Avengers, we won’t be pleased if he’s running the show. Be they man, god, android, mutant, alien or supernatural being, there’s only one man to whom Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will answer. Only one mortal who has the authority to lead a billionaire playboy and an uru hammer-wielding deity into battle and that man’s name is Steve Rogers, better known to me and you as Captain America.

Not that our knees wouldn’t buckle when we heard the commanding voice of Samuel L. Jackson. Trust us, if he called, we’d come runnin’. But we hope the powers-that-be resist the urge to make the S.H.I.E.L.D. director the man in charge of the team.  Nick Fury doesn’t lead the Avengers; Captain America does. Let’s see that reflected in the movies.

What do you want to see in the Avengers movie?

Harry Knowles at Ain't it Cool filed a cryptic rumor report regarding 'The Avengers'.

According to some source, who may or may not be reliable that actor Jeremy Renner is "possibly" going to be in Marvel's 'Avengers' movie as Hawkeye.

Renner, who blew up in last year's acclaimed Iraq war movie 'The Hurt Locker', revealed last November that he had taken meetings with Marvel about playing the character in 'Thor' as a cameo and as part of the run-up to the super-group pic.

So is AIC hearing a re-hash of last November's story? Or is this new information confirming that Renner is on board? It's hard to say given the vagueness of the report. Knowles cautions his readers to take the typically-prescribed dosage of salt and admits that there's an element of confusion to his understanding of the information that's been given him.

If 'The Avengers' movie is loosely following Mark Millar's 'Ultimates' as its model then Hawkeye is a natural fit for the story. In the Ultimates storyline, he's simply a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent with a very specific skill set, much like Black Widow was depicted in 'Iron Man 2'.

I think they're doing an excellent job of using the other movies to hype this one, introducing characters and concepts that will come together in The Avengers, building the links between them. They've obviously put a lot of thought into this whole Marvel reboot.

I have read DC is going to start the same thing with the Green Lantern movie and future Batman films. They hope to build to a Justice League film.
