Debate Feedback
« on: April 18, 2008, 07:42:56 AM »

The "General Debate" round of the Interforum Olympics has just come to a close, in which Team PWH and Team PWR had to argue why the forum they represented was better.

Naturally, as well as touting their own perceived positives, each team also picked on the perceived negatives of the opposing forum. Now with the judging over, this is your opportunity (if it had to be explicitly given) to comment on the issues raised by Team PWR about this forum, and let us know which criticisms you agree with and what changes you'd like to see made by PWH staff.

If you haven't already done so, please check out the debate here - only four competitive posts in total, as we want to keep the last few Olympic rounds moving swiftly. ;)

"Could not locate remote server"

Looks like that's a problem they share with PWH.

I was actually going to make a thread like this.

I've been trying to rack my brain on how to improve PWH, because we all know member activity is down. I haven't seen a post by Neil or Poison in ages, and they're both staff members. Onetime regulars are disappearing left and right. I don't know what to do to curve it. There are simple suggestions, I suppose, such as get rid of these generic skins in exchange for some better ones, ones that differ in more than just color. I'd like to see the forum condensed a little where applicable, and I suppose that fun folder titles would be nice too... but these things are nitpicky, and honestly, won't improve the inactivity.

Anybody want to take this one? Anybody?

The biggest problem with this forum is the lack of active posters. The only real way to solve that is for active members to go on some sort of membership drive. Get people to come back and get new posters to join up. If you know someone that likes wrestling, tell them about the place. If you are a member of another forum that allows links in signatures or other type of things, put a PWH banner and link in your signature.  That's my :2cents:

All of these comments are useful - does anyone have more? I'm hoping a concensus can be reached on some things.

I never really dug the graphics next to the forums, i.e. the wrestling rings, etc. I always found them to be kind of cheesy and generic. Also, this isn't something one person could do, but should be done collectively, I think if we all talked more with one another about our "real lives" we'd be a lot closer.

I've been talking on here with some of you for years now and know very little about it. Sometimes it seems like I'm discussing things with strangers.... know what I mean?

A visual makeover could really help. It wouldn't solve all problems, of course, but it's amazing just how refreshing a makeover of any kind can be.

The short WrestlingMania time excluded, the board in it's various incarnations (PWH or WX) has looked pretty much the same since the beginning. It looks almost identical for five years now. A completely different skin with a radically different banner could make everything feel much more fresh.

In other words, it'd be a start. Maybe the spark that starts the fire, maybe not - but it's worth a shot.

I'm not even going to touch the debate as a whole. but as far as changes. Change is good, but the real change needs to be in posters. I think that everything else fails inline after that.

Little update: We're looking into adding new theme/skin options, which may be accompanied by a new logo. With the number of code edits that need to be made to support the board's non-standard features, it could take a little while but I didn't want anyone to think this thread was being ignored.

The most talked about issue here so far seems to be the lack of new/active posters. Any and all ideas (and gung-ho attempts) to improve that situation are very welcome.

One thing I'd like to specifically ask is what you'd like to see done with the Graphics folder. It does indeed receive little attention these days. Should we remove it altogether? Relocate it? Try to repurpose/rejuvenate it? Does it have a place at PWH in 2008?

Sometimes it seems like I'm discussing things with strangers.... know what I mean?

I'm sorry, who are you?

I'd say merge it with another folder, but I can't think of one that would really match up well.

Maybe just turn it into a sub-folder for Entertainment or Off-Topic? It'll still be there and seperate enough to stand out, but it wouldn't be a relatively inactive section given a spotlight like busy folders.

Perhaps we could merge it with General and make it an all around "Creative" board, where we can continue to share random topics, post graphics, include stories (if anyone is in to that kind of stuff) as well as games. I know that the games folder is rather active, but combining these three into one could make the forum seem less inactive.

I think it'd be a draw to new posters, entering the Creative forum and seeing several topics with new posts, rather than one or two which happens in the General forum.

This is how I'd layout the site, personally...

Site Related Forums
-Announcements/Suggestions
-Get to Know

Wrestling
-WWE (Raw and Smackdown)
-ECW
-TNA/Indy
(most general wrestling is PPV discussion, which could be just as well served in a WWE forum)

General Forums
-Entertainment (Movies, TV, Games)
-Creative (General Discussion, Fun and Games, anything else creative wise)
-NHB

And as I've suggested in the past, perhaps a PWH library forum with classic threads, but I understand that wouldn't necessarily appeal to new posters... also, if discussion around here picks up with new members, we can expand the forums on a need-be basis.
