That I basically work for a company that I realized today is very WCW-like in the way it works, at least in this region. Right down to the "glory days" being a few years in the past and the future seeming completely dim.
- People are taking days off with little to no warning. Like for example I found out about a month ago in a casual conversation outside of work with a fellow employee that our supervisor was planning on taking a vacation this month. That was both the first and last I ever heard about it, so while I remembered it was rumored to be coming up, it never came up again so that seemed like that was it. Well...I have papers that are very important (as in required for me to get paid) that I had to turn in to him today - only he's on vacation now and never once said a word to give me a heads up.
- Almost every day is a work day where I often have absolutely no idea what I'm supposed to be doing because the people that are supposed to at least give us some idea of what is going on for the day never got around to telling us. All of the time I hear complaints from stores because I didn't do something I was apparently supposed to do despite absolutely nobody telling me that I was supposed to do it, or even giving me a clue.
On a similar note, it was only a few months ago that a mandatory company-wide meeting was set for one afternoon on one of my days off (I still had to go, though). Despite these things being told days ahead of time, my superior decided not to inform me or the other guy (me and another guy work in this town kind of disconnected from the HQ because it's too far away for daily two-way commutes). Well, at least he didn't inform HIM for the first time about the mandatory meeting until about 1:30pm - when the meeting was starting at 3pm and the drive to even get to the place was roughly an hour in the best conditions. I capitalized "him" because he never told me, expecting that the other guy would just naturally tell me.
- The level of incompetence and cowardice when it comes to putting your foot down is at sickening levels all throughout the power structure. Despite completely inept employees and constant complaints from outside and within, the bosses that have the power to do something about it all never do a thing. They'll "have a talk" with the person, which basically means they're acknowledging the situation but nothing else every happens. No punishments. Nothing.
- With superiors and equals alike, you can be sure that whatever complaints about other people they're making to you, they're doing the same with others about you. Everybody has a knife that they're just dying to put in your back immediately when they get the chance to.
It's gotten to the point where I'm pulling back and trying to work with as little contact with everyone else that I possibly can make it by with because all of this politicking and sheer idiocy is making the job a lot harder than it needs to be. I feel paranoid now because I always have to expect someone else doing something to cut me off at the knees so they can get half a step ahead.
I am not exaggerating at all when I say I don't trust a single person who works for the same company. It's every man for himself.
