Main Site Update
« on: July 14, 2003, 04:41:05 PM »

Those who are keeping score at home may remember that I mentioned something about "hopefully July" for launching the main WrestleXpress.net website. Here's the latest update on that.

A few weeks ago, I purchased the ultra-special news software that will be used on the site, at a price not to be scoffed at. But I had all kinds of problems trying to install it. After repeated contact with both the software designers and our hosts, I finally know why. This server doesn't support ASP technology.

Hence, in order to use this news software (and after shelling out so much for it, there is no question), WX is going to have to move to another new server. But don't panic!

Unlike the move from Lycos, this transition will not force us to lose all our forum data. At worst, the forums may close for a couple of days to allow the DNS system to redirect the "www.wrestlexpress.net" address to our new server, which takes time. By closing the forums during that time, we can ensure that posts made in that period are not lost, thus preventing confusion!

Perhaps the most important thing for you to take away from this message is that it won't be happening for a few weeks yet. Don't expect to log on tomorrow and find the forums closed, they won't be. When it comes time, I'll make sure everyone has sufficient warning, and I hope you'll be patient enough to return after those few days for which the forums are closed. Once they re-open, you shouldn't notice anything different - and may think it was all a strange dream...

So "hopefully July" has now slipped towards "hopefully August," simply because I want WrestleXpress to be the very best that it can be, instead of settling for what might be easiest. When the waiting and the headaches are over, I'm sure that everyone will agree that it was worth it. If you don't, I shall condemn you to a lifetime of communicating with support desk jobbers as punishment. ;)

I'm not trying to insult or demean you in anyway Heady, but, how could you not know what you can and cannot do when you're paying for it.

When ever I go server shopping, I alway make sure I know my options. If I want or know I'll need ASP and CGI support I'll look for it. All I need is PHP and SQL support so that's what I look for. But I digrees because the impending server change will not see our posts be deleted.

Well I do feel insulted and demeaned, but at the time of switching to our current server (done primarily to escape Lycos), I didn't know which news software I'd be using. If I'd known I'd be needing ASP support, then I would have made sure to get a host that offered it.

Thanks for the update Heady! While some of us may seem impatient for the site to open, i doubt any of us are upset if you say you need extra time to get it working. I have never put a site together, so i have no idea how much work goes into it. If you say you need more time, then i have no problem giving it too you.

But on a personal note, i hope i get to see it.  Sometimes during August i go back to college. Except this semester instead of living at home and going to a local college,  i transferred to a college hours upon hours away from my home, meaning i'll have to move. I don't know what my schedule will be then or how my computer access will be. I hope i get to see it.

Headdy take your time.  I am extremely anxious to the see the site open, but I can wait until you're ready.  I know you want WX to be the best site it can be, as do the rest of us.  So if that means you need more time then no problem.  And if the forums need to close for a couple days, that's alright.  I'm sure we can all sacrifice a couple days for what will be a much needed and helpful change to WX.
